Tiny Champasak, gateway to a small hillside temple complex of outsized spiritual importance, lies in one of the most enchanting spots in all of Laos. Travelers I met tell me they’re skipping a visit to Champasak to head straight from Pakse to the hammocks of the 4,000 islands in the lower Mekong River. I tell them they’re missing a trick. This pretty river-facing town of Buddhist temples, palms, low-slung homes, shophouses, the odd French-influenced royal palace, and a scattering of shops, cafés, and restaurants, is a relaxing spot to kick back in after visiting nearby UNESCO-protected Wat Phou.

A hip addition to the culinary palette of Luang Prabang, Popolo is located in a lovingly restored heritage building and serves up a delicious menu of Mediterranean cuisine. They have a fantastic selection of fresh salads, pasta, and pizza from their wood-fired oven, which go down great with one of their creative cocktails.

A MILLING CULTURE

One of Laos' favorite features is its cultural diversity. In Salavan province alone, there are 12 distinct ethnic groups, the majority of which belong primarily to the Austroasiatic (Mon-Khmer) language family. The largest subgroup in the region is the Katou ethnic group, mainly scattered along the Bolaven Plateau (Paksong, Salavan, Sekong) and Attapeu.

Sometimes the best things are found where you least expect them. Savannakhet is the most populous province in Laos, yet also one of the least explored, as tourists seldom stray from the pleasant and scenic downtown area of the city. On a recent visit, I was advised to get out and see the real Savannakhet on the Champhone Circuit. To find out what I was missing, I acquired some transport and headed out of town.

The 4000 Islands in southern Laos, low lying sandy clumps in the Mekong River, are famous for their easy-going pace, banana pancakes, afternoons in hammocks, dolphin-spotting opportunities, wide-sky sunsets, and raucous parties.

The Bolaven Plateau is an adventurer’s paradise! Literally translated as “Home of the Laven,” the name honors the Laven ethnic group which was once more predominant here. ‘Doing the Bolaven Loop’ is a popular tourist activity all year round and it’s easy to see why. The area is rich with coffee plantations, glorious waterfalls, quaint little cafes and restaurants, botanical gardens, and farms – all easily accessible by either car or motorbike.

The Hmong are one of the more famous ethnic groups in Laos – proud of their identity and protective of their culture, they have their own spoken and written language, and are the third-largest ethnic group in Laos, with about 9% of the population. The Hmong began migrating from southern China into Laos in the 19th century. They inhabit the northern and central parts of the country including Xieng Khouang, Luang Prabang, Oudomxay, Luang Namtha, Xayaboury, Xaysomboun, Vientiane, and Bolikhamxay provinces. Today, they have a large overseas diaspora in the US, Australia, and even French Guiana, in South America.

An important junction between Luang Prabang, Vientiane, and Xieng Khouang, Phou Khoun is becoming a tourist destination on its own. In the winter months, local strawberry fields provide perfect opportunities for camping and the cooler temperatures are perfect for campfires. Sacred Stones of the South

During its peak nearly 1000 years ago, the ancient Khmer empire ruled over a large part of Southeast Asia. After this empire collapsed, new centers of power emerged on top of former Khmer lands and structures, enveloping these into new kingdoms, religions, and purposes. Many of the remaining Khmer structures in Laos have not received much repair or restoration, so accessing them may be difficult, but well worth the effort to stand in structures from another era.
