Overview
Setting foot at the Mekong Elephant Park: After crossing the mighty Mekong, your guide will begin by introducing the team, the sanctuary, its mission, and initiatives towards animal welfare. Visitors will also be given an in-depth presentation of our elephants, explaining their very own story and their family ties without forgetting to hear about the special bonds they all individually share with their mahout.
Meeting the elephants: Enter the pure primary forest and meet the elephants in their natural habitat. At the Mekong Elephant Park, we do not allow physical interactions between visitors and the elephants. We encourage passive observation as we believe we are the invitees to their world and environment and wish to just let them be.
Jungle Trekking: Follow your guide through the natural trails left by the elephants and hear about pedagogical and educational tips. Admire how the herd is happy to gather and how they interact and feed on their natural food.
Elephant Bath: Experience a pure moment of fun as elephants toss and roll around in the water. And please don’t be disappointed if they decide not to take a dip…again; we leave it up to them if they feel they need to cool off or not.
Lunch: Enjoy a full Lao set menu at the Mekong Elephant Park restaurant. All ingredients are mainly sourced from our botanical garden (special vegetarian, vegan or any dietary menus may be prepared with prior notice)
Activity of the Day: After a well-deserved lunch, your guide will instruct you on the day’s activity which can range from, making vitamins balls, to picking fruits and vegetables for the elephants, to trekking the surroundings and admiring the Mekong views…
Handicraft Know – How: Stroll through the compound and meet our craftsmen Mr Kam the blacksmith, Ms Mee, the weaver and Mr Mong, the bamboo specialist. You will be fascinated by their expertise, their unique handicrafts with the creation of articles that each have their story (and which you could even chose to bring home!)
Happy Times together: Observe the elephants in their leisure area and see how each elephant plays its role in the herd.
Medical All Clear: Each day, our mahouts perform a check up on their elephants to be sure that they are in good shape. On a rotational basis, each elephant comes once a week to the vet check training, essential to create a routine and to look out for to be sure of the animal’s well-being: their teeth, eyes, foot soles, ears…. Visitors will be explained that the manipulation of parts of the pachyderms’ bodies is essential to be sure that in case of vet emergencies, they can go through a medical check up without being afraid or overly stressed out. Or remain simply as docile as possible…
Farewells: From the sanctuary’s premise, visitors will say their goodbyes and be transferred by boat back to Pakbeng
Note: Timings and activities may vary depending on the weather conditions or any special needs the elephants or the mahouts could require.
