Vat Phou Champasak

Vat Phou (also spelled Wat Phu) is one of the most important archaeological and religious sites in Laos and a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site. Located at the base of Phou Kao Mountain in Champasak Province, approximately 40 kilometers south of Pakse, this ancient Khmer temple complex predates the famous temples of Angkor in Cambodia and represents one of Southeast Asia's most significant historical treasures.

Originally established as a Hindu sanctuary dedicated to Lord Shiva between the 5th and 13th centuries, Vat Phou became an important spiritual center of the Khmer Empire. The temple complex was strategically built to align with the natural landscape, with Phou Kao Mountain representing the sacred Mount Meru of Hindu cosmology. A natural spring flowing from the mountain was considered holy and played a central role in religious ceremonies.

The site is renowned for its remarkable architecture, which blends seamlessly with the surrounding environment. Visitors enter through a series of ancient reservoirs, ceremonial pathways, sandstone terraces, and intricately carved structures that lead gradually up the mountainside. The upper sanctuary offers stunning views across the Mekong River valley and the surrounding countryside.

Throughout the centuries, Vat Phou evolved from a Hindu temple into an important Buddhist pilgrimage site. Today, many of the shrines contain Buddhist images, and local worshippers continue to visit the complex for religious ceremonies and merit-making activities. This unique blend of Hindu and Buddhist influences reflects the rich cultural history of Laos and the wider Mekong region.

Among the highlights are the ancient stone carvings, lintels decorated with Hindu mythology, sacred elephant and crocodile carvings, ceremonial stairways, and the natural spring that still flows through the sanctuary. The peaceful setting, framed by mountains and forests, creates a spiritual atmosphere that attracts historians, archaeologists, photographers, and travelers from around the world.

Each year, the Vat Phou Festival, held around the full moon of February, draws thousands of pilgrims and visitors who gather to celebrate traditional Lao culture, Buddhist ceremonies, music, and local handicrafts.

Mekong Island

South of Kong Island (the largest in Laos) are the 4000 Islands, or Si Phan Don in Lao. This area of extraordinary beauty is known for its fine food (especially fish dishes), distinct temple architecture, and warm hospitality. On Don Det and Don Khone, remnants of an early 20th century railway and steamship port can be visited. At Hang Khone village or at the Laos-Cambodia border, local boats can be hired to observe the endangered freshwater dolphins that inhabit this section of the Mekong.

Accessible from the tiny Don Lai Island, which is just 1 km from Don Khone, Som Pha Mit Waterfall is another amazing natural site to visit. Here, you can relax, enjoy the scenery, watch people fish, and enjoy freshly caught Mekong fish. This waterfall is named after a Sacred Buddha image (Pha), which was dropped in the water and never to be found again by the first King of Laos, Chao Fa Ngum, who was travelling through the region by boat.

Many people have erroneously called it Li Phi, which actually refers to the entire 20 km East-West stretch of waterfalls and rapids of Si Phan Don (including both Khone Pha Pheng and Li Phi). The name Li Phi was given to the area because it acts like a giant fish trap (Li) and will kill any of those who dare to navigate it (Phi means ghost or dead person). As suggested by the name, it is important to watch your step and be cautious around the waterfall.

Don Khong

Don Khong is the largest and Northern-most of the 4000 Islands. It is also the capital of Khong District and is the logical base for trips to the rest of the islands. The island boasts 99 mountain tops, a rich heritage of temples (15 in total) and French colonial buildings. It is 24 km long and 8 Km wide and has 19 villages, many of which derive their livelihood from fishing. The main market in Ban Kang Don is a great place to visit in the early morning to see the many varieties of fresh mekong fish available.

Other specialty products of the island include palm sugar, palm leaf hats, and Lao Kao Gum - a potent alcohol. Two of the island’s mountains, Phou Kyo and Phou Kew, each have sacred caves and offer a refreshing walk in the forest with clear views of the island. A fantastic way to see the island is to drive along the paved ring road around by bicycle or motorbike. It is recommended to visit the “Historical Museum of Don Khong”, located in the center of the island, to glean insights into the lifestyle of the Don Khong people.

To get to Don Khong from Pakse, take Route.13 South and travel for about 130 km, turning right at the sign pointing to “the Don Khong”. Follow the paved road straight ahead for 4 km to the bridge, whereupon you cross Mekong river to Don Khong.

Don Det and Don Khone

Don Det and Don Khone are the next most popular islands, after Don Khong. Both islands offer relaxing bungalow accommodation and an island pace of life. From Don Det, rafting and kayaking trips can also be arranged that take you into the heart of the 4000 Islands.

Don Khone is joined with Don Det by a historic railway bridge built by the French in 1910. Next to the bridge sits an old locomotive, one of the last remnants of the railway. In addition, visitors can walk or ride bikes to Don Lai Island to see the Li Phi Waterfall or take a trip to see freshwater dolphins from the tip of Don Khone.

To get to Don Det or Don Khone from Pakse, take Route.13 South for about 141 km and turn right onto a dirt road at the sign pointing to Nakasang (the end ofthe road). From the pier, you can take a boat to Don Det, which is about 15 minutes away. From the pier at Don Det, you can take a shuttle bus to Don Khone Island - it's a 25 minutes ride.

Phu Salao Temple (Golden Buddha)

Phu Salao Temple, officially known as Wat Phu Salao, is one of the most iconic landmarks in southern Laos. Perched atop Phu Salao Hill on the eastern side of the Mekong River, the temple is best known for its magnificent Golden Buddha statue that overlooks the city of Pakse and the surrounding Mekong Valley. The site combines religious significance, panoramic views, and stunning photography opportunities, making it one of the most visited attractions in Champasak Province.

The temple sits on a hill approximately 150 meters above the city, offering breathtaking views of Pakse, the Mekong River, the Xe Don River, and the surrounding countryside. Visitors reach the temple via a scenic road that winds up the hillside. Upon arrival, they are greeted by the impressive seated Golden Buddha, which has become one of the most recognizable symbols of Pakse.

The giant Buddha statue shines brilliantly under the tropical sun and can be seen from various parts of the city. It represents peace, wisdom, and compassion according to Buddhist teachings. The statue serves as both a place of worship for local Buddhists and a popular destination for travelers seeking cultural experiences and spectacular viewpoints.

The temple grounds are peaceful and beautifully maintained, featuring traditional Buddhist structures, prayer areas, gardens, and viewing platforms. Many local residents visit the temple to make merit, offer incense, and participate in religious ceremonies, particularly during important Buddhist festivals and holy days.

One of the main attractions of Phu Salao Temple is its sunset view. As the sun descends over the Mekong River and the city of Pakse, the viewpoint offers some of the most spectacular scenery in southern Laos. The golden light reflecting off the Buddha statue and river below creates an unforgettable atmosphere that attracts photographers and visitors alike.

At night, the illuminated Golden Buddha can be seen glowing above Pakse, creating a striking landmark visible from across the city. The combination of spiritual importance, scenic beauty, and accessibility makes Phu Salao Temple a must-visit destination for anyone traveling in southern Laos.

The temple is often included in itineraries alongside nearby attractions such as Vat Phou, the Bolaven Plateau waterfalls, and the Four Thousand Islands (Si Phan Don).
